Turmeric: The Super Spice!
Turmeric is one of the great superfoods. It has a lot of benefits, the most important of which, in my opinion, is its anti-inflammatory properties. Most pain is caused by inflammation, so I use turmeric in a lot of my cooking, in addition to taking turmeric supplements.
When you're taking turmeric supplements, be sure that they include black pepper as an ingredient. The pepper helps the turmeric be absorbed into your system more quickly. And of course, I always make sure to include black pepper with turmeric when I'm cooking.
Ingredients You'll Need
- onion
- garlic
- red potatoes
- turmeric
- salt
- black pepper
- garam masala
- olive oil
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a different kind of potato?
Sure. Our favorite is red potatoes, and Yukon Gold are a close second. But you can use russet or any other kind of potato, or even use fingerling potatoes, cut in half lengthwise.
What is garam masala?
"Garam masala" is the term for a spice blend commonly used in Indian cooling. It literally means "warm spices". There is no single recipe for garam masala. Every region, village, and family may have their own recipe. A typical blend might include coriander, cloves, cumin, cinnamon, cardamom, black pepper, nutmeg, and chiles.
You can usually find garam masala in the spice section at the supermarket, or you can make your own mix. Debbie can't stand cloves, so we always make our own.
Make Some Sheet Pan Turmeric Potatoes! It's Easy!
Here are the ingredients: potatoes, onion, garlic, and spices. Simple prep!
Put all the ingredients in a large bowl and stir to mix well. You'll see a lot of sheet pan recipes that say to put all the ingredients on the sheet pan, drizzle with oil, and toss to mix. Let me tell you, mixing in a bowl is a lot easier that tossing on a sheet pan! Yes, you have to clean the bowl. But that's easy, and you just do it as soon as the pan is in the oven.
Here's everything spread out on the pan. Turmeric gives food a lovely yellow color!
Open the oven every 10 minutes and toss the taters a bit so that they cook evenly. Here they are right out of the oven.

Easy to make and full of flavor. I mixed up my own garam masala, and am happy to have this new (for me) spice blend on hand. The leftover potatoes were served as an accompaniment to chicken korma the next night. Excellent!

I don't think I could live without turmeric and garam masala! But I recently got a advance review copy of an Indian cookbook that uses some other masala blends, so I'm going to be checking those out. I'll be reviewing the book here when it's published.
