What is Hash, and What Does It Have to Do With Hashtags?
"Hash" as a verb means "to hack or chop into small pieces". In cooking it means a stew of meat cut into small pieces, and that meaning dates from 1735. It's used in a lot of common sayings, like "hash something out" (break a problem down into pieces) or "make a hash of it" (ruining something by making a lot of mistakes).
The "#" symbol has many names, depending on how it's used. In America it used to commonly called the "pound sign" when used for weights. In Britain it's usually called the "crosshatch", because the pound symbol is the monetary pound sterling (£). It's also used to mean "number", as in "Skip to step #4." And in music it's the "sharp" symbol.
Using hashtags in social media was originally proposed by blogger Chris Messina in a 2007 tweet. It became popular on Twitter, and soon spread to Facebook, Instagram, and other social media platforms. So hashtags aren't related to the chopped-up meal. (Unless you're posting about a hash recipe and add "#hash" to your post.)

Don't Make a Hash of Your Hash!
This is a pretty simple recipe, so it would be pretty hard to make a lot of mistakes with it! Here's what you'll need: potatoes, kielbasa, onions, bell pepper, seasonings (red pepper flakes, onion salt, garlic salt, kosher salt, and black pepper) and corn.
My store didn't have any large red potatoes except in a 5-pound bag, and I wasn't sure I would be using that much very soon. So I got a 1-pound bag of baby red potatoes.
You can use any red pepper flakes that you have on hand. But if you've been following us you know that we like to bring on the heat! I used Flatiron Pepper Co "Four Pepper Blend" in this recipe. It's a mix of arbol, ghost, habanero, and jalapeno peppers. It has a great flavor, and really spiced this dish up!
Start by heating some canola oil in a large skillet. Add the kielbasa and potatoes and sauté for 10 minutes, until the sausage starts to brown and the potatoes begin to soften.
Add the onion, green pepper, and seasonings. Sauté for 10 minutes, until the onion is translucent and the green pepper and potatoes are tender.
Add the corn, stir to mix, and cook for about 2 minutes.
It's done! Adjust the seasoning if needed, plate it up, and prepare to be amazed!
Of course, a good plate of hash is always better with an egg on top!
